S.O.A.R.

I am currently President of S.O.A.R.,
Sylvan Old Auburn Road Neighborhood Association (Area 10)

The Sylvan Old Auburn Road Neighborhood Association (Area 10) is bounded by Sylvan Road, Old Auburn Road, Greenback Lane and Sunrise Boulevard.

SOAR is a 501c3 tax-exempt non-profit corporation. We have a 5-member Board of Directors. Currently our Boardmembers are: Dr. Jayna Karpinski-Costa (President, Treasurer), Natalee Price (Vice-President, Secretary and REACH representative), Vacant (Community Liaison Officer Vacant (Teen Director}. While the pandemic took its toll on our board members, we have resumed our meetings and are confident we will recruit new volunteers.

 Here is our current brochure

SOAR's mission is to promote a sense of pride, awareness and involvement in our community by facilitating communication of information, by advocating a safe environment, and by advancing the interests of its members in interacting with institutions and agencies that provide services to our neighborhood.

Formed in 1998, we have a long history of community projects

 Some of our past projects:

  • "It's for the Birds" – our annual fund-raising yard sale
  • “Caring Neighborhoods Program” to help seniors with everyday tasks thereby enabling them to continue to live safely and comfortably in their own homes longer
  • SOAR to Healthy Heights – an annual health fair. SOAR won “Neighborhood of the Year” award at the national conference of neighborhoods (NUSA)
  • Donations to other non profits (Lifesavers at the Police Department, San Juan High School Anniversary, Domestic Violence, CH Marching Band, Foothills K-9 Assn for retired Police Dogs, Veterans, Gold Star Wives)
  • Arcade Creek Park- cleanup day, restorative planting day, cash donation
  • Free Bike Helmets to kids
  • Installation of a “Sensory Trail” in Arcade Creek Park for visually challenged and others

Some of our current projects

  • 9-1-1 house numbers: to provide highly reflective uniform house numbering. This will greatly increase house number visibility and allow quicker response time for police, fire and other emergency services. The signs are free to anyone who lives within the boundaries of SOAR. If you would like a house number, please contact us.
  • SOAR feeds seniors at Christmas and Easter – we brings food to participants in the Meals On Wheels Program
  • Safe and Sane Fireworks sales to raise money for our projects (we gave the Park District over $8,000 for Arcade Creek Park); currently saving up for a “legacy project”

Some of our future projects:

  • "It's for the Birds" – our annual fund-raising yard sale
  • An “Aromatic Garden” in the Sensory Trail at Arcade Creek Park – looking for an Eagle Scout
  • Little Fee Library – we sponsored one of the Little Free Libraries and it was placed in Arcade Creek Park. It was severely vandalized and we are waiting for the repaired “library” to reinstall.

SOAR meets the 4th Monday of each month at the Sylvan Community Center 7521 Community Drive (corner of Sylvan & Community) At 6:30 p.m.

You are welcome to join us for our next meeting!
